Dear Athlete,
Since the time I was 3 years old, I had been brought up as a ballerina, moving from training to shows, carrying a cellphone the size of my head. I was, by any definition, a highly successful athlete. I performed in an impressive range of shows and productions, and won numerous awards. However, after years of dedicated training and investment, I tore my ACL and temporarily halted my ballet career by the time I turned 16.
How did this happen? I was participating in a national dance festival where I performed for 4 days of intense activities. The moment I went back to my regular routine, I audibly tore my ACL, superseding the sound of piano playing in the background. My teacher and peers could do nothing but look at me in horror. Now normally, It felt like the music and world just stopped. My first thought when I fell to the ground was, “Please don’t have a torn ACL."
It was not until 2 weeks after the injury and receiving treatment that my chiropractor made me aware that my entire calf was no longer attached properly, and shifting within a one inch gap. After an MRI scan, I had confirmed that I had indeed torn my ACL. This injury halted me from training and performing the sport I loved. I was told that I would never dance again. Normally, when you receive a career stopping injury like this, at such a young age when dancing is literally your life, there is a gnawing obsession that keeps you from thinking about everything you have lost, and the possibility of what could have been.
This led to a deep depression. I endured intense physical pain from the fracture. I sustained excruciating pain after the reconstructive surgery being in a broken and traumatic state. I felt helpless, unable to move or perform. My world became dark. I wouldn't wish that injury on anyone. However, while recovering from reconstructive surgery, I was determined to not let my spirit break. I decided to apply the same vigor and rigor I had learned as an athlete to my academic studies.
In an incredibly short time, I completely reoriented my life from athletics to science, culminating in a PhD in Nanoscale science by 25. The results were astonishing. Driven by a desire to be a force for good and champion knowledge, my dissertation explored creating light from common organic materials. Eventually, I succeeded in applying my expertise towards engineering Organic LEDs from plants, such as tea leaves, berries, and orange peels.
Driven to share my work, I became an entrepreneur. Subsequently, I participated in numerous national and international business and technology accelerators, including the National Science Foundation ICORPS and an international materials accelerator AdMaCom. My research and development of various Organic LED materials revealed the wide range of form factors and therapeutic applications of Organic LED light.
For example, red light accelerates recovery from intense physical training, despite grueling regimens. I know the dedication it takes to train 4-6 hours daily, 6-7 days a week, for 15 years. Perhaps if I had a reliable method for supporting my body's natural recovery it might have prevented my injury. Let me explain further.
The truth is, an athlete's performance is only partly determined by training, sleep, diet, and determination. Uncontrollable factors significantly influence their controllable performance. These factors include genetics, social stress, and recovery activities. During my intensive training, I prioritized rest and recovery. However, an invisible strain built up in my bones and muscles. With it left untreated, this strain led to my traumatic injury. As it happened to me, it can happen to anyone at any time.
The difference between good and exceptional athletes is the emphasis placed on creating sustainable training programs with comprehensive recovery strategies. Ultimately, intense training is counterproductive if it reduces an athlete's career span. The duration of athletic achievements is a direct result of consistent, long-term effort, avoiding injury and undue strain. Moreover, effective recovery enables athletes to repair training damage, maximizing their long-term performance potential.
The experiments within my research and development demonstrated the potential of red light therapy to prevent the athletic injury that halted my career. Recent advancements in red Organic LED light applications to physical recovery, specifically muscle tissue and bone stress fracture rehabilitation, show great promise. However, these advancements have been slow due to the dominant focus on surgical and pharmaceutical treatments
The lack of innovation in this area has resulted in limited, costly, and less effective red LED solutions. You might be wondering, what's the difference between LED and Organic LED technology?
Traditional LED technology, Light Emitting Diodes, produces photons in a direct path. It works well for camera flashes, heat lamps, traffic signals, and aviation lighting. However, for red light therapy, it generates heat. This creates a sauna effect. As a result, exposure time is limited, and there's a risk of discomfort and eye damage.
Organic LED technology, Organic Light Emitting Diodes, produces photons in a conical path. This diffuses the light naturally. As a result, they are less intense on the eyes and don't generate heat, even with prolonged exposure. This also allows for flexible lighting solutions. They are therefore suitable for more naturally fitting devices and longer application times. You've likely seen Organic LED technology in televisions and smartphones.
